Beeing an intern

There has been a lot debate recently about the working environment of the many interns working in Parliament, whether or not MPs basically exploit peoples desperate need to make the first step into politics in return for highly educated free labour.

I have been an intern too- not just in parliament but in marketing as well. My first round of working for free was with a small marketing company in SoHo london. It was basically a one man company where the boss was heavily dependent on free labour 40 hours a week. I can honestly say that it was the most god awful 6 weeks of my life mainly because he spent most of his acting like a 2 year old every time the tiniest thing went wrong, he just couldn’t handle stress, he constantly changed his mind about what he wanted us to do, he saw the world in black and white, refused to listen and spent 6 weeks telling me just how stupid I was. Thanks for that! Leaving HandmadeUK behind was the best thing I ever did. Shortly after that I got an internship with a member of parliament as a caseworker and it was just the best job I have ever done. Everyday I went to work I made difference to someones life- which is more than I can say for anyone working at HandmadeUK. An MPs office is a busy place and as a caseworker you are constantly exposed to other people’s problems but the times you manage to swing a case in someones favour just makes it all worth it. Personally I think there is lot to be gained from internships however, I do think that if hiring an intern is just an excuse to get the work done but not pay someone to do it is inexcusable. May I suggest that perhaps all interns should be paid minimum wage- come on all you MPs out there, we are clearly indespensible to you so perhaps a little more appreciation wouldnt go amiss?

A question of loyalty

I have been a George Michael fan longer than I care to remember and because you’re a fan you join the fan club, myself included back in 1996 when the whole thing was run by his long time friend Shirlie and his cousin Andros. Back then – perhaps because the Internet was still somewhat innocent-we use to get the odd letter from George and a weekly newsletter from Shirlie..

Anyway, times move on and these days, I guess, George would rather (insert list of things George refuses to do cos he’s famous, paid someone to do it…) than directly interact with fans. This dosen’t bother me so much, sure it was nice to receive those email, but what really really fucks me off is that ever since he hired an American company run by Michael Lipperman to be in charge of his fan club I have rarely come across such incompetence. And I work in politics so I guess it’s saying something..

My point is that when you upgrade/renew your membership you don’t get access to at least 50% of the forums, Admin (whoever you are) ignores you, any news is put on the website 5 years after you read it on http://georgemichaelforums.com, the 2006 25Live VIP package pre- sale caused untold grief to many many fans and many more horror stories. My point is that when people pay $40 for something we expect something in return. I am not asking for George to be all grateful because it is my choice to join but I will expect problems to fixed and not to be ignored. I don’t know whether or not George is aware of just how bad things are- it is his fanclub so even if no one bothered to tell him he has had every chance in the book to find out for himself- there is NO goddam excuse for treating fans this way..

I have always had an almost morbid fascination of what you might choose to refer to as Spirits and the spirit world, an interest I intially shared with my grandmother who used lend me one or two books on the subject which served as my introduction.

I have always believed that we have really vivid dreams and wake up with a unnerving sense that the dream was in fact “real” on some level, then it is in reality our Spirit/Soul simply visiting the other side. I have never embraced the idea that the other side is some heavenly place with white fluffy clouds and load of angels running around in white garments, but I embrace the idea that it is “simply” a paraell, a reflection this side so to speak.

Now since I lost a sibling 9 years ago, my fascination with the other side has only but intensified and even though it also scares me (alot) for me personally it kinda serves as reasurring thought that when we die we do not just disappear into some void but we move on to another dimension. And although there is no excat, undeniable proof that our soul moves on after our death, there appears to be plenty of circumstancial evidence out there and various people who make it their lives work to find definite proof come up with new methods all the time, the newest one, to me anyway, is EVP (Electronic Voice Phenonomon) which is essentially recordings of the dead talking. Personally, I am sort of in two minds about this, the reason being that SOME not all of these recordings are pretty good whilst others, well, they are not so good…
